Binah.ai Adds Fall Detection to Its Software-based Health and Wellness Checks

Binah.ai, the leading provider of artificial intelligence (AI) powered health and wellness check software, announced today that it has added fall detection to its continuous health and wellness monitoring platform.

Binah.ai empowers end users to measure and share a wide range of health and wellness indicators using their smartphones. For spot checks, end users simply take a 45-second video selfie using their smartphone camera. For continuous checks, end users connect a Polar Verity Sense™ optical heart rate sensor to their smartphone via Bluetooth®.

Through Binah.ai’s software, end users can measure blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, oxygen saturation, respiration rate, and sympathetic stress, as well as bloodless blood tests such as, hemoglobin* and hemoglobin A1c* (*currently under research). Additional bloodless blood tests will be available this year.

The addition of fall detection to Binah.ai’s continuous checks bolsters Binah.ai’s comprehensive health and wellness monitoring solution.

How does the fall detection feature work?

Users wear a Polar Verity Sense™ optical heart rate sensor and keep their smartphone in their vicinity. When a fall is detected using the Polar sensor’s gyroscope and accelerometer, a fall event is generated on the end-user’s smartphone. A notification with a short timer can be set to appear on the end user’s phone screen. The user can cancel the alert if they did not fall or it was a casual fall from which they recovered. If the timer ends, a message can be sent to a designated contact indicating that a fall event has been detected. Following a confirmed fall detection event, the system triggers two consecutive measurements of blood pressure, heart rate, heart rate variability, respiration rate and mental stress. Binah.ai’s technology also captures the user’s location via the smartphone’s GPS. Fall events are logged in the management dashboard for easy review and can be displayed separately from the other vital signs. The fall detection feature runs continuously, even between two pre-set vital signs measurements. Binah.ai’s technology runs on the edge device and Binah.ai has no access to end-user health data or fall events detected.

Binah.ai‘s fall detection goes beyond alerting after a fall. By continuously monitoring health and wellness metrics, Binah.ai can help users identify potential risk factors for falls before they happen. This proactive approach allows users to take preventive measures, such as addressing underlying health conditions or adjusting workflows.

Why is fall detection important and who needs it?

As per a 2021 global report from the World Health Organization, falls stand as the second primary cause of unintentional injury fatalities across the globe. Annually, over 680,000 individuals succumb to falls worldwide, with over 80% of these incidents transpiring in low- and middle-income nations. The demographic most affected by fatal falls comprises adults aged 60 years and above. Additionally, each year around 37.3 million falls necessitate medical intervention due to their severity.

Fall detection is a critical safety solution for various populations, including seniors, whether at home or in nursing homes, providing peace of mind to their families and caregivers and serving as a convenient tool to enhance chronic disease management.

Fall detection is also crucial to improve the safety of out-of-the-office employees such as construction workers, manufacturing line employees, delivery personnel, heavy machinery and critical operators, etc.

“We’re thrilled to add fall detection technology to our offering,” says David Maman, Co-Founder and CEO of Binah.ai. “This feature, integrated within our comprehensive health and wellness monitoring solution, has the potential to significantly reduce fall-related injuries and improve overall wellbeing for people in multiple industries”, added Maman.

When will fall detection be available?

The fall detection feature is available to customers starting Q2/2024 through the Binah Connect app and Binah SDK.

On April 17, 2024, Binah.ai will hold a live webinar and Q&A session, introducing the new fall detection feature. To register, please click here.
